Open Call

Open Call for Research Partner: Evaluation of Charities and Projects to Improve Global Wellbeing
Overview

Bloom Wellbeing Fund is a pooled philanthropic fund that disburses charitable dollars to highly impactful charities, research initiatives, organisations and projects to improve global wellbeing. Founded in January 2024, we have established a track record in efficient and cost-effective giving.

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced research partner to collaborate on analysis aimed at evaluating charities and research projects with the goal of improving global wellbeing at scale. Our focus is on assessing the impact of these initiatives using established impact measures and methodologies with an emphasis on leveraging evidence and cost-effectiveness. The analysis will be directed by the Bloom team and the findings may aid the Bloom Wellbeing Fund in its grant decision-making and other wellbeing ecosystem development activities.

The successful organisation or applicant will be paid from Bloom’s pre-allocated research budget, which ranges from $10,000 - $15,000 per quarter. In the instance that we receive many exceptional applicants, we may award contracts to multiple research partners.

Objectives

Evaluation of Charities and Interventions to aid grant-making
With direction from the Bloom team, the research partner will conduct analysis to evaluate the evidence, effectiveness and potential impact of various charities and interventions on improving global wellbeing at scale. We expect a mixed methods based approach will be applied to the evaluations, including initial cost-effectiveness estimates of impact on wellbeing.

Identification of new areas that could cost-effectively improve global wellbeing
The partner may also be requested to conduct exploratory literature reviews and data analysis into new, emerging or neglected cause areas or geographies that have potential to cost-effectively improve lives and/or reduce suffering, with an emphasis on interventions to support low and middle income countries.

Contribute to supporting expansion of the wellbeing funding ecosystem
The research partner may be expected to support wellbeing funding ecosystem building activities which could include:

  • Producing accessible and concise briefs aimed at Philanthropists, Private Foundations, Family Offices and other funding organisations.

  • Presenting research findings at conferences and events.

  • Writing web articles or blogs for the Bloom Wellbeing Website and/ or associated platforms.

  • Working with other Bloom partners to deliver on activities that lead to expansion of the wellbeing funding ecosystem (examples include providing technical assistance to charities to collect data for large grant proposals, contributing to funding consortiums as an expert speaker etc.)

  • Provide training or educational assistance to support other funding organisations and ecosystem players to measure wellbeing outcomes.

Outputs/Deliverables

The research partner is expected to contribute outputs every quarter (tbd based on the availability of the research partner and discussions with the Bloom team).

Outputs could include:

  • Internal impact evaluations or estimations (including initial cost-effectiveness calculations)

  • Internal briefings (written and/or verbal)

  • External reports or web articles tailored to funders, philanthropists and audiences interested in evidence-informed wellbeing

  • Presentation of findings at online or in-person meetings, conferences or events (any costs associated with travel or attendance at events will be covered based on Bloom's organisational policies)

Requirements
  • Demonstrated experience in synthesising data and conducting research efficiently

  • Strong capability in producing impact measurements, cost-effectiveness or cost-benefit calculations

  • Proven ability to produce reports, articles or briefs that convey research findings in an accessible manner

  • Collaboration skills and ability to take on board direction and feedback to improve outputs

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Desired skills and experience
  • Experience in conducting research with a wellbeing lens is a bonus but not a requirement

  • The Bloom Fund managers are in London and Tokyo, so an ability to work to one or both of these timezones is a plus

  • Ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders, including philanthropists, practitioners, and other research partners.

Workstyle expectations

The research partner is expected to discuss with the Bloom team at the start of each quarter to align on key deliverables, deadlines and schedules. The research partner is expected to work autonomously and be responsible for delivering research outputs in an efficient and timely manner to support Bloom's goals.
